New Hall Vineyards Essex Left Field Blend 2018

A unique blend created especially for showing fresh and characteristic honeydew melon and
peach notes complemented by a crisp, zesty and grapefruit finish.

Producer Note
Piers Greenwood is a bit of a visionary, he planted his vineyard in Purleigh, Essex in
1969, which makes it one of the oldest in the UK. The vineyard benefits from a very
special microclimate and Purleigh is one of the warmest and sunniest spots in the
country. Today New Hall Vineyard has 40 hectares under vine and one of the largest
plantings of Bacchus in the UK. Winemaker Piers has won the prestigious UK
Winemaker of the Year Award in 2013, 2015 and 2016 and his highly acclaimed and
award-winning wines showcase English Wine at its best.

Vintage
2018 saw a late budburst due to cooler weather at the beginning of the season.
However, the weather warmed up which encouraged good flowering and fruit-set.
The summer saw ideal growing conditions, with warm, dry weather which produced
ripe grapes with naturally high sugars, lower levels of acidity and more tropical fruit
flavours. Early harvest took place at the end of September.

Vineyard
The vineyard is situated in the Crouch Valley wine region, which enjoys a temperate
climate, with warm, dry summers. The sheltered position ensures a long growing
season which allows fruit to obtain high sugar levels at maturity and to develop
intense, complex aromatics. The vines are some of the oldest in the UK, so the
pruning methods are adapted to the age and vigour of the vine. A strong emphasis
is placed on soil health, in order to minimise the use of herbicides. Mechanical
under-vine treatments are employed to suppress weed germination, thereby
minimising the use of weed-killers. A programme of subsoiling and row cultivation
improves soil health alongside the application of manure. Siegerrebe was originally
created in Rheinhessen and is a pink skinned grape variety mainly grown in England.
Siegerrebe was originally created in Rheinhessen and is a pink skinned grape variety
mainly grown in England. It literally translates as ‘champion vine’ and produces
aromatic wines. Ortega is a crossing of Müller Thurgau and Siegerrebe, producing
aromatic wines with good body, excellent for blending.

Winemaking
Each variety was vinified separately to showcase the key varietal and clonal
characteristics. The fruit was hand-picked to maintain the highest quality, before
being whole bunch pressed. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled
stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts. Ageing took place with ageing on the lees
for three to four months promoting complexity and roundness to the finished wine.
