The Alsace vineyards are situated in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, extending over 160 kilometres from Cherbourg in the north to Thann in the south. Situated on the fracture zone between the lowlands and the mountains, this feature generates a variety of subsoils. The soils in this vineyard are marl and sandstone, rich in iron based minerals. Protected by the Vosges Mountains, these vineyards have the lowest average annual rainfall of all French wine regions. The vines are Guyot pruned. Green harvesting and strict canopy management ensure good sunlight penetration and ventilation for the berries during the ripening period. The grapes are manually harvested once they have reached optimum maturity.
