This exceptionally balanced Chardonnay has real depth and grip, married to incisive acidity and well-defined, complex flavours of citrus, apricot and brioche. Full-bodied yet refined and mineral, this is a true reflection of its coastal origins.

“The wine shows beautiful floral notes intermixed with citrus and honeysuckle, has great natural acidity and a hint of wet rocks giving it minerality and crisp, medium-bodied, nicely concentrated flavors. It reminded me of a premier cru Chablis.” – 91 points, The Wine Advocate, October 2015

‘This has a delicate marzipan note with white flower blossom,’ said ETM Group’s Guillaume Mahaut of this aromatic Gold Lister, while Ieva Markaityte of Portuguese Concepts picked up ‘elegant ripe melon’ with ‘a touch of fresh thyme flowers’. For team leader Lionel Periner the wine was both ‘elegant’ and ‘full bodied, with a long ripe fruit finish and good acidity’, and fellow team leader Tom Forrest noted ‘pineapple and peach fruit, with a fresh apple, mineral finish’.

Producer

Founded in 1973 by the eponymous Joseph Phelps, this winery is one of the true Napa Valley pioneers, and has set a quality benchmark for Napa ever since its inception. Following a period of expansion and diversification, Joseph Phelps is now concentrating purely on Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties – plus Scheurebe! The production has been scaled back to the point where all the fruit comes from estate vineyards, which is something of a rarity in California. This is now a brilliantly focused, dynamic producer that refuses to rest on its laurels.

Vineyard

The Freestone vineyards lie between the Russian River Valley and the Pacific coast, five to eight miles from the latter. At five hundred feet above sea level, they are above the fog line, and coastal breezes help drive off any residual morning moisture. The climate is cool but sunny, with a long growing season. The grapes were hand-picked in the cool morning temperatures of mid-September to early October.

Winery

The grapes were whole-bunch pressed directly to French oak barriques, with thirty-five percent new oak, where the wine fermented and aged for thirteen months. Barrels were stirred when necessary, and the wine went through malolactic, before bottling.
