A clear ruby red colour, this quietly magnificent Pinot Noir has a seductive, complex aroma of wild strawberry, redcurrant and fresh spice from whole bunches. The palate is medium-bodied, delicate, with great freshness and clarity of fruit expression allied to silky tannin. Harmonious from start to finish, this Pinot Noir fully embodies the joy of the new wave California style.

Producer

Nick Maloney is a California native with Burgundian training. Raised in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, he studied in Beaune and made wine in Pernand-Vergelesses while launching Father John, named in honour of his grandfather, a priest. A trial run of 200 cases of Pinot Noir was produced in the 2012 vintage, with full commercial production (just over 400 cases) beginning in 2013. The style is a sheer delight: a delicate yet uncompromising expression of Californias confident return to finesse in Pinot Noir. We tip Nick for great things.

Vineyard

The grapes come from the Oehlman Vineyard, which has been farmed by the family of the same name since 1892. It is located north of Sebastopol on Vine Hill Road, next to the Kistler Estate. The vines are planted on Goldridge sandy loam, and receive no irrigation or pesticide treatments.

Winery

The grapes underwent a minimum of three days cold maceration, with a high proportion of whole clusters. The fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a maximum of 25ºC, with minimal punch-downs. The wine was aged on lees in French oak barrels, with twenty percent new wood, and one racking before bottling. No fining or filtration took place.
