Kayra is producing premium wines from the Anatolia region -considered to be the birthplace of wine- and is at the cutting edge of winemaking. The wines are made from unique and intriguing local as well as international varieties. These indigenous varieties, while being ancient to Turkey, are being vinified using modern techniques and are producing award winning results. The vines are planted in the best sites following the philosophy of terroir and the vineyards and wineries have been significantly invested in. The Elaziğ winery, located in Eastern Anatolia, was established in 1942 and is dedicated entirely to the production of red wines. The Şarköy Winery in Thrace was built in 1996 and embraces a cellar for 1,200 barrels, reserved for the ageing of special cuvées. Under the guidance of consultant winemaker Daniel O'Donnell, it is Kayra's aim to reveal the true potential of Turkey and to bring their rich history and generous spirit to lovers of fine wine.
2014 saw average climatic conditions throughout the growth cycle. Later in the season when the grapes were maturing, the diurnal temperature difference increased extending the period in which the grapes ripened and concentrating the polyphenols in the wine.
The Öküzgözü grapes, which are pronounced "O-kuz-goez-zu" and the Boğazkere grapes- pronounced "Boaz-ker-a" were fermented separately. The grapes were cool macerated for 48 hours before being fermented in stainless steel tanks over a period of 10 days. The wine was aged in oak barrels for 21 months comprising 6% new American oak, 9% new French oak and 85% neutral oak.
A bold and concentrated wine with intense aromas of ripe cherries and dried plums which are complemented by notes of toasted bread and cedar. The powerful palate displays concentrated fruits framed by structured tannins and a long, full finish.
A great food wine, which suits heavy and richly sauced red meat dishes, grilled steak, roasted vegetable kebab and hard cheeses such as parmesan and aged Cheddar.
