About the Producer – Tasca d’Almerita, Sicily’s Pioneering Wine Estate
The historic Tasca d’Almerita estate, also known as Regaleali, has been in the hands of the noble Tasca family since 1830. For nearly two centuries, they have balanced tradition with innovation—leading the way in Sicilian viticulture. Known for short pruning to control yields, championing native varietals like Inzolia and Nero d’Avola, and incorporating modern techniques such as temperature-controlled fermentation, the Tasca family has built a reputation for quality-driven experimentation. Their recent expansion into Etna’s contrade has produced some of their most exciting wines to date.
The Vineyard – Contrada Sciaranuova, Mount Etna DOC
The Contrada Sciaranuova vineyard is located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, at a cool elevation of 730 metres above sea level. Planted in 2008, this 4.9-hectare site lies on ancient volcanic soils aged between 4,000 to 40,000 years, with a gentle slope of 8.5%. This unique terroir imparts a distinctive mineral signature and vibrant energy to the wine.
Tasting Notes – Refined, Volcanic, and Complex
This vintage of Tasca Tascante Nerello Mascalese 2020 opens with intense aromas of wild cherry, blackcurrant, dried herbs, and smoky volcanic earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful interplay of red and black fruits, firm yet elegant tannins, and a racy acidity that lifts the finish. The wine is marked by the grape’s natural floral fragrance and minerality, making it a superb companion for roast lamb, grilled vegetables, or Sicilian aubergine dishes.

| Winery | The large Regaleali estate, high in the central Sicilian hills, has been in the hands of the noble Tasca family since 1830. Ever since, the property has been run according to the best principles of the agricultural aristocracy: with one eye firmly on quality and the other on experimentation. Tasca’s large range is the product of the family’s most successful innovations, including short pruning for lower yields, the championing of local Inzolia and Nero d’Avola vines, the introduction of French varieties, and the use of barriques and temperature control. They have also been developing vineyards outside their main base at Regaleali. There is wonderful passito Malvasia made on the Aeolian island of Salina, and more recently, the family established their Tascante estate on the north-facing slopes of Mount Etna. The tradition and terroir of each location are captured with great clarity in the bottle. This is a singularly accomplished and increasingly complete range of Sicilian wines. |
