Founded in 1830, the Tasca family has built a reputation for excellence and innovation from their historic Regaleali estate in central Sicily. Over generations, their commitment to low yields, local grape varieties, and modern vinification has helped define the region’s high-quality output.
Their Tascante project focuses on the volcanic terroir of Mount Etna, with Contrada Pianodario representing one of the finest crus in the area.
Contrada Pianodario – A Unique Volcanic Vineyard
Located at a high altitude of 775 metres above sea level, Contrada Pianodario is a small, meticulously cultivated vineyard on Etna’s northern slopes. Planted in 2010 on volcanic soils formed 4,000–15,000 years ago, the vineyard’s stony terrain, combined with a 7% slope, creates the perfect environment for refined, mineral-driven wines.
Only 3.8 hectares of the 7.9-hectare site are planted, underscoring the low-intervention, quality-first philosophy behind this cuvée.
Winemaking & Aging
Fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures (25–30°C), the wine undergoes an eight-day maceration to extract vibrant colour and fine tannins. Malolactic fermentation follows to soften the texture, before 12 months of aging in large Slavonian oak casks, which preserves freshness and enhances complexity.
Tasting Notes – A Pure Expression of Nerello Mascalese
Expect sweet yet vibrant strawberry and wild berry flavours leading on the palate. There’s a lively thread of acidity that lifts the fruit and introduces a gentle savoury nuance. Fine-grained tannins give the wine structure without overwhelming the finish. A masterclass in balance, this is a textbook Etna red—elegant, mineral, and incredibly drinkable.

| Winery | The large Regaleali estate, high in the central Sicilian hills, has been in the hands of the noble Tasca family since 1830. Ever since, the property has been run according to the best principles of the agricultural aristocracy: with one eye firmly on quality and the other on experimentation. Tasca’s large range is the product of the family’s most successful innovations, including short pruning for lower yields, the championing of local Inzolia and Nero d’Avola vines, the introduction of French varieties, and the use of barriques and temperature control. They have also been developing vineyards outside their main base at Regaleali. There is wonderful passito Malvasia made on the Aeolian island of Salina, and more recently, the family established their Tascante estate on the north-facing slopes of Mount Etna. The tradition and terroir of each location are captured with great clarity in the bottle. This is a singularly accomplished and increasingly complete range of Sicilian wines. |
