A spicy and vibrant wine made from varieties
traditionally grown in the south of France showing
herbal notes with hints of lavender.
Producer Note
Olifantsberg is passionate about producing authentic wines with a true sense of
place, which reflect the unique location of their vineyard. The focus is on sustainable
farming and winemaking practices, resulting in limited intervention in the both the
vineyard and cellar. The team are fully committed to understanding their terroir and
managing their natural resources through conservation, which adds to the
singularity of their wines. The unique terroir with its combination of schist soils,
constant winds and elevation, produce concentrated fruit that results in elegant,
fresh and age-worthy wines.
Vintage
A wet winter was followed by a warm summer in 2013. Humidity threatened rot
during the harvest, but those who successfully waited for dryer conditions, were
rewarded with healthy grapes. Reds are of particularly good quality.
Vineyard
The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range
where they endure big diurnal temperature differences and strong winds, at
altitudes from 250 to 450 metres above sea level. During the winter the mountain
peaks are snow covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters,
coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes, helps to
maintain healthy vines and contributes freshness and elegance to the wines. The
soils in the vineyard comprise a unique schist and slate, which lends structure to the
final wine. The vines are cultivated in a sustainable manner and are mostly bush
vines or "sur echalas". The vines are supported by a vertical wooden pole- a total of
65,000 of these wooden poles were planted to establish this system, across the 12
hectares that are planted "sur echalas". This system is appropriate for drought
resistance and trellised to provide maximum complexity from the fertile soils.
Winemaking
This handcrafted wine is based on Syrah, with small additions of bush vine
Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Natural fermentation took place in open-top
fermenters, followed by maturation in French oak foudres and barrels for a further 10
months.
Tasting Note
Fresh, pure fruit expression is complemented by a beautiful perfume, a balanced
palate and an elegant finish.
Serving Suggestion
A great match for herbed rack of lamb; barbecued gourmet burgers or rich
aubergine and lentil dishes.
