San Marzano Tramari Salento Primitivo Rose 2020

Made from the Primitivo grape, this is a very appealing
pale and tangy rosé with aromas of roses and red
cherries against a creamy background of Mediterranean
spice.
Producer Note
In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano whose families had farmed the land for
generations, combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine San Marzano'. Through the
decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers.
Using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques they produce
elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of
time honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques, enables this winery to
produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the
local terroir. In 2021, San Marzano was awarded the ‘Cooperative Winery of the Year
Award’ by Gambero Rosso.
Vintage
During 2020, low spring temperatures resulted in a 15 to 21 day delay between the
flowering and fruit setting stages. However, a sharp increase in temperatures from the
second week in July reduced the delay to 10 to 12 days. Broadly, due to the overall
lower sunny days registered during winter and spring, the yields were reduced. The
summer was dry, windy and sunny with ideal pre-harvest conditions. The yields for the
red grapes was reduced by between 25 to 35%; the grapes harvested were very
healthy and of good quality, with an excellent aromatic profile.
Vineyard
The San Marzano Primitivo vineyard is located in Salento, Puglia and is situated at
approximately 100 metres above sea level. The area is characterised by high average
temperatures and a medium-low rainfall. The vines are planted at a density of 4,500 per
hectare. The soft soil layer is clayey and quite thin, with a good presence of rocks,
providing good drainage for the vines. Harvesting takes place during the first week of
September.
Winemaking
Skin contact maceration took place for several hours, followed by a partial drawing off
the must. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks,
preserving the aromatics and fruitiness of the Primitivo variety. Ageing then continued in
stainless steel to retain freshness.
