Errazuriz Las Pizarras Pinot Noir 2018

Ageing beautifully, the 2018 is showing great balance
and structure. On the nose are aromas of rosehip, myrtle,
sour cherries and bergamot, accompanied by soft notes
of marzipan and dried fruit notes while the palate is
marked by fresh red fruit, floral notes and subtle hints
of citrus fruits, sweet spice and brioche. This is a truly
sublime wine, a world-class Pinot Noir.

“Great aromas of dried strawberries and
fresh flowers, such as lavender. Full-bodied
yet very tight and focused. Impressive tannic
structure, but refined and polished. Lightly
chewy. Finishes tight and refined. Best pinot
of Chile. Drink after 2022, but hard to hold
back.”

Luis Gutierrez, August 2019
The wine has great purity and transparency
and is very clean and expressive, with good
complexity and aromas of blood orange and
sour cherries, a note of iron and a touch of
cinnamon. They used some full clusters in
the fermentation, which seems to have added
some grip, and the wine matured mostly in
300- and 500-liter oak barrels. It has abundant,
fine-grained tannins, good weight and juicy
fruit and comes through as nicely textured,
balanced and elegant, but not heavy or ripe.
The wine is a lot more elegant, and I think it’s
the best vintage so far of a wine that can now
be the benchmark for the variety in Chile.”
James Suckling, April 2019

The name ‘Las Pizarras’ is taken from the
Spanish word for slate (pizarra) and it
is this slate, along with schist and other
metamorphic rocks, which makes up the
two specific blocks of the Aconcagua
Costa Estate where the grapes for the
2018 vintage were sourced. The vineyards are only
8 miles from the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean
and this unique terroir, along with minimal intervention
in the cellar, delivers a sublimely elegant wine with great
depth and complexity.
Francisco and the Errazuriz winemaking team had first
pioneered the growing of cool climate varietals in the
coastal area of Chile in 2005 when the vineyard was
planted. Believing that the terroir was capable of creating
wines which matched the freshness, grace and elegance
of the great Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, Francisco and the
winemaking team first released Las Pizarras Pinot Noir
2014 to great acclaim, with Luis Gutiérrez commenting
‘Most would place this in the Côte de Nuits’. Since the
launch, the wine has gone from strength to strength,
captivating critics and wine lovers alike.
