- Due to moderately cool conditions, it is an outstanding vintage that translates into slow, smooth grape ripening. The result is a pure, elegant, and refined wine. “Sena 2021 is a beautiful deep ruby colour with violet hues. The nose reveals delicate notes of strawberries, cassis and rose petals, framed by hints of cloves, spice and cocoa. Red fruit, blackcurrants, pastries, and dark chocolate make for a delicious palate. The juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins perfectly balance the tension, tracing a smooth and vertical backbone through the palate. This wine can be enjoyed for many years to come.”
- Francisco Baettig, Winemaker, February 2023
The grapes were handpicked in the morning and transported to the winery in 12-kg boxes for a careful inspection on a double sorting table to eliminate plant matter and defective berries. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks at 24°30°C (75°86°F), depending on the variety and the level of extraction desired. The pump-overs were carried out daily during fermentation to rotate 0.5-1.5 times the tank's volume. Total maceration time ranged from 15 to 30 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc, and 8 to 12 days for the Petit Verdot, according to the development of each block blend was racked to French oak barrels (65% new) and aged for 22 months. During that time, malolactic fermentation and stabilization occurred naturally. The grapes were sourced from our 350-hectare Sena Hillside Vineyard in the Valle de Aconcagua, 41 km from the Pacific Ocean. This region features an extended dry season with moderately warm summer days cooled by gentle afternoon breezes that blow in from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyards are planted on a hillside with a north-eastern solar exposure that gives each parcel its microclimates, producing wines with distinct characteristics.
An intense red hue with strikingly purple edges. The nose is intense and complex, with red and black fruit aromas, such as raspberries, cherries, currants and blueberries, with some touches of dill, blond tobacco, cedar, and olive notes. The palate follows the aroma with the same fruit complexity and lasting structure perceived in the nose, where the fruity flavours mingle with cocoa, nutmeg and coffee. It is an elegant, deep and tense wine with a perfect balance of tannins, acid and fruit. With a long and promising ageing potential.

Winery | Tim Mondavi (Robert’s son) and Eduardo Chadwick conducted an extensive four-year search throughout the entire Aconcagua Valley, finding the perfect terroir in Ocoa. Tim was ahead of his time in insisting they seek out a cooler site to make a fresher, more elegant wine than was the norm in the mid-1990s. One of Sena’s key goals from the beginning was to work closely with nature while preserving natural resources. This led to the implementation of biodynamic farming, sustainable practices, and organic agriculture very early in the planning stages and the development of the Sena Vineyard. Sena's 42-hectare hillside vineyard was planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere, along with Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The volcanic and colluvial soils on the valley’s slopes present a variety of textures and proportions of stone content, resulting in a great diversity of well-drained gravel and rocky soils with loam to clay-loam texture. Sena is a unique Bordeaux-style blend regularly benchmarked alongside First Growths and other top Cabernet-based wines. It is known for its complexity, structure, fine-grained tannins, and acidity. |
