Teusner Joshua Barossa Valley Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2019

Unoaked, this wine is packed with flavour of spicy berried fruits complemented by mint and herbal undertones, juicy and quite delicious.

Producer Note

Established by Kym Teusner and Michael Page in 2001, Teusner’s philosophy is to produce only exceptional, affordable wines by being very selective about the fruit, which is sourced from old, well maintained vineyards in Barossa. These vineyards reliably produce balanced, complex fruit which are guided, with minimal input, into stunning wines. Kym decided to make the Righteous Shiraz because he wanted to showcase his own expression of what he considers the ultimate Barossa Valley Shiraz style...intense, powerful and long-lived.

Vintage

The last vintage that winemaker Kym saw that was this good for Grenache and Mataro, was 2009! Average rainfalls over the winter led to a fairly dry, warm summer with very low disease pressure. An Indian summer during March and April extended the season bringing perfect, moderate weather conditions which allowed the vines to achieve excellent ripeness, especially in the later – ripening varieties of Grenache, Mataro, Durif and Montepulciano. In 2018, the grapes offer amazing balance, with great colour, flavour and acidity; and supportive but not intrusive tannins.

Vineyard

The highlight here is the age of the Grenache vines, which are between 65 to 130 years old and are mostly in bush vine format, on their own rootstocks. The fruit is sourced from several subregions, but Ebeneezer in the north-west of the Valley has the oldest vines - the exact age of the vines is not 100% certain, suffice to say that three generations have seen them grow. A splash of Syrah from of Shiraz from 20 year old vineyards at Gomersal on the western ridge, adds complexity to this vibrant blend.

Winemaking

Oak was not used in the vinification of this blend to showcase the freshness and vibrancy. Fermentation took place between 22 to 24°C in small, open fermenters and lasting for seven days with twice daily manual pumpovers. Blended straight after the vintage in the tank, followed by naturally occurring malolactic fermentation. As soon as it was clarified, it was bottled in order to preserve its freshness. Both Grenache and Mataro have the ability to taste beautiful in youth and as they age, they become more interesting, developing savoury and earthy profiles
