Tasting notes - Approachable, striking and modern, this red blend oozes complexity - with the Shiraz's earthiness tempering the Grenache's muskiness; and together they soften the subtle steeliness of the Mataro. Notes of rose petal, musk and plum prelude a medium bodied palate with vibrant berry flavours and fine tannins underpinned by a cleansing acidity.

Medium bodied, this delicious and fleshy wine has flavours of fresh and juicy cranberry and blackberry with a herbal and smoky bacon tang. Rhône with a silky Australian twist.

Producer Note

Named ‘Winery of the Year’ by James Halliday and Matt Skinner, Larry Cherubino wants his wines to be distinctive and to speak clearly of their variety and vineyard site. He believes in paying meticulous attention to the vineyard, canopy and water management, picking at the right time and minimal intervention in the winery. Larry also makes wine under the Laissez Faire label, an exquisite range of natural wines which are the ultimate expression of site, made in small batches from hand harvested grapes. From delicate whites to opulent reds, all his wines have pure class and finesse.

Vintage

A dry start to the winter was followed by timely spring rains. The summer was mild and dry with temperatures below 30°C which allowed the fruit to ripen very slowly, resulting in strong acidity levels for the whites and deep colours for the reds, with full flavours and lower sugar levels. 2018 was a very strong vintage for the region.

Vineyard

The vineyard is located in the Frankland River area of the Great Southern, which is considered to be one of the most distinctive viticulture areas in Australia. The flavour of wines grown here comes from a granite based soil. These gravelly soils also line the river valleys, rolling hills and lowlands. The vineyards are situated with a northern orientation, optimising the long sunlight hours, which promotes ripening and maturation of the grapes. The vines were planted in 1997, with 1,650 vines per hectare.

Winemaking

The fruit was hand-picked and sorted, followed by fermentation in small lot fermenters. A moderate extraction was aimed for, thus ensuring vineyard characters were fully expressed. The wine was then aged in new and one year old oak, for six to eight months.
