Katnook Estate Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

This 20th vintage release is classic Odyssey and showcases the essence of Coonawarra. With 36 months maturation in French and American barriques, intense regional and varietal fruit characters are seamlessly combined with an array of oak maturation characters.

Katnook Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon is one of 53 wines listed in the ‘Outstanding’ category of the Langton’s VI, Classification of Australian Wine. It is also rated 96 points in Halliday's 2019  'Wine Companion'.

Intricate layers of concentrated fruit and oak. Rich dark berry, mulberry and plum fruits with hints of mocha and vanilla are complemented by assertive fine-grained tannins and balanced oak maturation characters.

Vineyard Notes
Coonawarra’s 2013 vintage was earlier and warmer than usual with below average rainfall, especially throughout the later stages of the growing season. Warm and dry conditions leading up to harvest, produced Cabernet Sauvignon fruit in exceptional condition. Created from small parcels of premium Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from our oldest terra rossa vineyards .
Winemaker Notes

Crafted only from exceptional parcels of fruit, after fermention the wine matured in : 36 months maturation in barriques, of which 64% was French oak (57% new French oak) and 36% older American oak barriques and hogsheads.

Food Pairing Notes
The concentrated flavours of Odyssey will match full flavoured dishes such as braised lamb with prunes, seared rib eye steak with salsa verde or gnocchi.

James Halliday, Wine Companion 15th
October 2019
The 2013 Katnook cabernet is a product of attention to detail. Meticulously crafted from only the best vintages, extended
oak maturation and an intense blend of fruit are characteristic of this iconic red wine.

Tyson Stelzer, WBM National 1st
April 2019
2013 encapsulates the Odyssey mandate of opulence, built around a compact core of cassis and blackcurrant fruit that has
been softened and polished over a considerable three years in oak barrels. The result is a deeply brooding style of great
integration and persistence, layered in dark chocolate and coffee bean complexity.

Winestate National 1st
January 2019
The 2013, from a warm vintage, is a wine that offers intense fruit married to powerful French and American oak. It is all
about richness and concentration and, ideally, it needs several years in the cellar…The $110 price tag underlines that this
wine is something special – one of just 53 wines listed in the “Outstanding” category of the Langton's Classification of
Australian Wine.

Stuart Robinson, The Vinsomniac (www.thevinsomniac.com) December 2018
The 2013 Odyssey was the last that legendary winemaker Wayne Stehbens ("Stebbo") oversaw from start to finish,
before his untimely passing in 2017. Reserved, more toast and char than what one might expect from Coonawarra
Cabernet. The body is supple, at odds to what seems a stern and reserved intro, generous - almost creamy - body.
Blackcurrant is a dominant character, with firm and quite compact tannin. It's certainly something for the long haul, feeling
tightly coiled and needing to unfurl. Its length is not denied, just at this present juncture yields to no one.
