Paringa Estate Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2018

A breathtaking Pinot with an extraordinary velvety texture
and elegant power enhanced by mushroom and violet
notes, long and sustained.
Producer Note
Located in the heart of Victoria’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Paringa Estate was
founded in 1984 by Lindsay McCall when he purchased a derelict orchard. Lindsay’s
passion and fascination with wine began in the mid 1970s and by the mid 1980s he
decided to follow his dream by establishing Paringa Estate. The first vintage was in 1988
with just three tonnes of fruit and over the years it has grown considerably, with
production now at 16,000 cases. Paringa Estate is one of the most highly awarded
boutique wineries in Australia, regularly winning trophies for its Shiraz, Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay. The collection includes a stunning and precise Pinot Gris, as Lindsay says
anywhere capable of growing great Pinot Noir should be capable of growing great
Pinot Gris. The wines pay homage to Burgundy in style and James Halliday says Paringa
Estate is “one of the best, if not the best, wineries on the Peninsula”.
2018 saw excellent weather during the flowering period and an almost perfect fruit set,
which resulted in the best potential crop for many years. Summer temperatures were
consistent and mild, without any heat spikes, which continued with fine weather during
the harvest. 2018 was characterised by very good yields of excellent quality, across all
varieties, and was one of Paringa Estates’ best vintages of the last 30 years.
The vineyard is set in the classic cool climate subregion of Red Hill at an altitude of 146
metres above sea level. The Pinot Nor vines are aged between 18 and 25 years; six
clones are planted each with subtle characteristics which impart complexity to the
resulting wine. The soil is a deep red volcanic clay that allows dry farming, without
irrigation. Founder, Lindsay McCall, still tends to the vineyard characterised by its
distinctive Lyre or ‘U’ trellis system which sits on an elaborate steel frame assembly.
The hand-picked fruit was 100% destemmed and cold soaked for four days prior to the
yeast inoculation. The wine spent a total of 21 days on skins in open stainless steel
fermenters with gentle plunging. Post fermentation, the wine was aged for 11 months in
French oak barrels, of which 35% were new.
Tasting Note
A breath-taking Pinot Noir with extraordinary texture, elegance and poise. Classic
aromas of red and dark cherries mingle with hints of spice. The palate is structured yet
elegant with excellent fruit weight and firm tannins with a long, complex and savoury
