- Inky black, with strong, classic bay leaf and earthy tones. Integrated oak neatly frames the intense fruit. This is focussed and textured, with very fine tannins. Larry’s Frankland River Cabernet template into a wholly different level of excellence. The fruit is so resonant and bright it is shocking, and this gloriously luxurious flavour attack is underpinned by brutal, singular minerality that is at once awe-inspiring and not a little malevolent. The back end is sour, dense, structured, ripe, cool, powerful, muscular, and brittle, arming this wine for the long run. It is like an intergalactic excavator has scooped up a large tract of Saint-EstEphe and deposited it among the karri trees in the southwest corner of Western Australia.
The grapes were grown in the Riversdale Vineyard in Frankland River in Western Australia. The vines were planted between 1996 and 1998 at a density of 1,650 per hectare. The vines are Houghton clones planted on their rootstocks with a southerly aspect. Frankland River soils are chiefly iron-rich lateritic gravelly or sandy loams derived from granite or gneissic rocks and are typically red in colour with a uniform depth. Some areas carry loams derived from the native Marri and Karri eucalyptus forests. The river valley is a major influence and is responsible for cool airflow. The average growing temperatures are mild, and the Albany Doctor, a sea breeze from the Southern Ocean, moderates the warm days.
Inky black, the wine has strong classic bay leaf and earth cabernet tones. It is very focused, mouth-filling, and has very fine tannins. Oak supports the intense fruit.

Winery | Former ‘Winery of the Year’ by James Halliday and Matt Skinner, Larry Cherubino wants his wines to be distinctive and to speak clearly of their variety and vineyard site. He believes in paying meticulous attention to the vineyard, canopy, and water management, picking at the right time, and minimal intervention in the winery. Larry also makes wine under the Laissez Faire label, an exquisite range of natural wines that are the ultimate expression of the site. They are made in small batches from hand-harvested grapes. All his wines have pure class and finesse, from delicate whites to opulent reds. The fruit was hand-harvested, transported to the winery, cooled overnight, and hand-sorted. Maceration lasted six weeks with minimal pump-overs and temperatures ranging from 12 to 27C. The wine was pressed into a tank and allowed to settle for seven days before oak maturation. A range of coopers were used in the wine’s development. |
