Producer Note
Rioja has many different styles, from the traditional strawberry, oaky Bordeauxinfluenced wines to some of the more modern, lighter styles. We searched for the best
of both worlds – a fruit-driven modern style of wine at Joven level and more
concentrated, typical flavours in the Crianza and Reserva levels. Carefully selected
growers from this area produce the Hugonell Joven. The Ondarre winery, which is
located 10km from Rioja’s capital of Logrono, is the specialist division of The Bodegas
Olarra Group for producing Crianza and Reserva wines. We are delighted to offer this
unique trio of wines with their original, distinctive packaging.
Vineyard
The fruit for Hugonell Crianza comes from vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and a
little from Rioja Oriental. The average age of the vines is approximately 15 years and the
soil patterns in the vineyards are a combination of the well-known
limestone/clay/alluvial mixture, which is found in most of Central Rioja.
Winemaking
The grapes were fermented at controlled temperatures of between 28°C in stainless
steel tanks with carefully selected yeasts. Malolactic conversion took place in concrete
vats, followed by 12 months’ barrel ageing in 225 litre oak casks, of which 65% were
American oak and 35% were French Allier oak. The barrels were of varying ages from
brand new to seven years, imparting complexity to the resulting wine. The wine was
gently fined and filtered before receiving 10 months’ bottle ageing prior to release.
Tasting Note
A smooth and rounded traditional Rioja blend of red berried fruits and beautifully
integrated oaky notes of subtle spice and vanilla.
