- This full, rich, and opulent wine is packed with red berry fruits with a hint of flint and oaky spice. The sumptuous texture built on fine tannins leads to a deliciously long finish. 2016 was a balanced year. The long, hot summer helped the vines produce concentrated fruit flavours and achieve excellent maturity; however, scattered rainy spells throughout provided respite from the heat and allowed the berries to produce balancing freshness.
The grapes were fermented using traditional red vinification methods in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats using wild, indigenous yeasts. The wild yeasts help impart the best expression of the terroir. Prolonged maceration helped extract the colour and flavours without over-extracting the tannins, which the Sagrantino variety is naturally high in. Maturation took place for 24 months in French oak barriques of second use. The wine was bottled without fining and spent a further 24 months being cellaraged in the bottle.

Winery | While the origins of Sagrantino are unclear, it has found its home in Umbria, where it has been the most widely planted for centuries. The vineyard is in DOCG Montefalco Sagrantino, directly opposite the hill town of Assisi in Central Umbria. The hilly terrain is rich and mineral, with clay-calcareous soils and good water retention properties to sustain the vines through the long, hot summers. Sagrantino thrives in the Montefalco terroir. The vineyard benefits from gentle breezes in this hillside location, which aerate the vines, keeping them healthy. The spur-cordon-trained vines are planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and produce low yields. The vineyard is cultivated to ensure the soil is balanced, biodiversity is preserved, and the grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning hours to maintain freshness and fully express the essence of the land. |
