Producer Note
Gérard Bertrand is one of the most outstanding winemakers in the South of France. A
biodynamic pioneer, he owns numerous estates among the most prestigious crus of
Languedoc-Roussillon. Formerly the IWC Red Winemaker of the Year and winner of
Wine Enthusiast‘s European Winery of the Year, Gérard has been cited as the “King
of the Languedoc” among critics. Acquired in November 2011, Château la
Sauvageonne is located northwest of Montpellier. With a long winemaking history,
this Château is a legendary site. The combination of its orientation, its situation on the
Larzac terraces at 300 metres altitude and the exceptional volcanic terroir, produces
stunning wines of unique character.

Vineyard
Château la Sauvageonne is in a legendary location. It has an exceptional exposure,
situation and terroir, which when combined together impart a unique character to
the wines. Located in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, in the central and
northern areas of the Hérault department, it backs onto the uplands of the Causse
du Larzac. The climate here is subject to diurnal temperature swings, with the
distance from the sea and the proximity of the Causse lending a certain coolness to
the summer nights; which is beneficial for a slow and progressive ripening process.
The vineyard soils are made up of Ruffes, sandstone and schist.

Winemaking
The grapes were hand-harvested at optimum polyphenolic ripeness, and then
meticulously sorted before being transferred to temperature controlled vats. Only the
ripe, healthy grapes were selected in order to maintain the high quality. The two
varieties were destemmed and vinified separately. Maceration lasted approximately
20 to 25 days. The wines were then transferred to new 225 litre barrels, where they
matured for 12 to 16 months.

Tasting Note
The bouquet is characterised by aromas of the garrigue, black fruits and spice, with
subtle notes of gingerbread. On the palate the cuvée Pica Broca shows fine, elegant
tannins and is well-balanced with a pleasing liveliness on the finish.
