Producer notes:

Although initially planted in the 1500s, the Chateau-Grand-Puy-Lacoste underwent considerable developments in the 1700s and the vineyard has remained unchanged since the Médoc classification of 1855 placed it among the elite of the Bordeaux wines.

As diligent as his predecessors, owner François-Xavier Borie is committed to a precise management of the vineyard. Chemical treatments have been halved in the last 20 years, no insecticide is used, and soil has always been worked manually without herbicides.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste’s soil is characterised by gravel, large pebbles and stones over a bed of limestone, ensuring excellent water drainage. The 55 hectare vineyard around the Chateau is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon serves as the backbone for many of the wines. The average age of vines is 38, with some vielles vignes dating back to 1947.

Vintage:

Patience is rewarded when it comes to vintages from Chateau-Grand-Puy-Lacoste as they have a great track record for aging (8 – 10 years is ideal). The 2012 is a subtly and continually changing pleasure with powerful tannic structure.

Vineyard:

The Médoc vineyards benefit from an Oceanic Aquitanian climate: sunshine, hot summers and mild winters and just enough humidity from the estuary. The finest vintages are often the product of a hot summer and late growing season.

Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly well-suited to the terroirs of Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The terroir’s gravelly soil absorbs heat during the day and releases it through the night, maintain a more constant temperature and encouraging the grapes can ripen evenly. The depth of the gravel encourages the plants to develop extensive root systems to find nourishment.

Winemaking:

Xavier-Borie’s winemaking methods are inspired by classic methods that have produced the Médoc’s finest wines.

The soils are worked manually, without insecticides or herbicides. The grapes are exclusively harvested by hand, with an initial ‘green harvest’ before ripening to decrease yield and improve quality. Once picked, grapes undergo two selections – one before and one after the destemming process.

The wine is aged in French fine-rained Allier oak barrels (one third new oak each vintage) for between 16 – 18 months before bottling.

Tasting notes

A beautiful deep colour with pure and complex aromas. A dark fruit nose – blackberries and sweet cherries, and very soft and plush on the palate. Mineral and sweet wood tones prevail with darker layers of coffee and tobacco. The tannins are supple and earthy, nicely balanced by the fruit. Medium acidity, with a long sleek finish.

Serving suggestions:

Well suited to classic roasted, grilled or braised meat, it also works well alongside Asian dishes and rich fish courses.
