Producer Note
Château Fortia is a symbolic estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, both for its location and
its roots that are closely linked to that of its appellation. In 1936 due to the efforts of
Baron Pierre Leroy, Châteauneuf du Pape became the first appellation with a set of
winemaking regulations. Today his descendants still continue the proud family tradition.
2019 witnessed an average amount of rainfall in spring. The growing season was very
hot and dry with heat waves from the end of June. The harvest started very early in the
season with grapes in excellent health, albeit producing a low yield. 15mm rainfall on
18th September was very welcome and allowed the Grenache grapes to reach
phenolic maturity, resulting in thick skins, intense colours and marvellous aromatic
purity. Aromas of ripe fruit, raspberry are to be found in the Grenache based wines,
while the Syrah reds reveal minty notes. On the palate the tannic structure is elegant,
mineral and beautifully concentrated. This vintage shows signs of a long ageing
Recent improvements in the vineyard have included the replanting of vines in the
correct plots of land to suit the grape variety. The distinct terroir here consists of red
clay, sand and rounded quartzite stones from the Villafranchian period. These stones
absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, ensuring full grape maturity is
reached. The yield is 30 hectolitres per hectare and the grapes are manually selected
during hand-harvesting to ensure only the highest quality of fruit is vinified.
This cuvée is a tribute to Baron Pierre Le Roy, through a powerful wine, which reflects the
typicity of the terroir. After rigorous sorting, the grapes were destemmed. Traditional
maceration took place, lasting four weeks, with daily pumping over to extract the
desired level of flavour, colour and structure. Fermentation took place with selected
yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks. Malolactic
conversion took place in large oak barrels. After racking, the wine was aged for 24
months in large, old French oak foudres, followed by further bottle ageing.
Tasting Note
Complex and rich aromas of graphite, black fruit jam and sweet spice lead to a full
and richly textured palate. Ample, with concentrated black fruits and a touch of spice
enveloped in a fine tannic structure, this has remarkable length on the finish.
