Chateau Fortia Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Red Rhone Valley 2017

A traditionally styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape showing
earthy flavours of baked red fruits and prunes, warm and
savoury.
Producer Note
Château Fortia is a symbolic estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, both for its location and
its roots that are closely linked to that of its appellation. In 1936 due to the efforts of
Baron Pierre Leroy, Châteauneuf du Pape became the first appellation with a set of
winemaking regulations. Today his descendants still continue the proud family tradition.
Vintage
2017 experienced a mild winter and spring, which ended with a cold snap at the end
of April. The summer weather was hot and very dry, especially during the growing
season, with temperatures exceeding 30°C in late June and increasing to 40.5°C on
the 4th August. The 2017 vintage is the second hottest vintage after 2003. These
drought conditions affected the yields, as they produced low yields of concentrated,
flavoursome berries.
Vineyard
Château Fortia recently completed improvements in the vineyard, including the
replanting of vines in the correct plots of land to suit the grape variety. The distinct
terroir here consists of red clay, sand and rounded quartzite stones from the
Villafranchian period. These stones absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night,
ensuring full grape maturity is reached. The vines produce a yield of 30 hectolitres per
hectare and the grapes are hand-harvested when they have reached optimal
maturity.
Winemaking
After a rigorous sorting, the grapes were completely destemmed and traditional
maceration lasted for four weeks, to ensure the optimal level of aromatic and flavour
components, colour and fine tannins were extracted. Fermentation took place with
selected yeasts in a combination of temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and
concrete tanks. The total vinification time lasted for approximately five weeks. After
racking, the wine was aged in large, old French oak foudres for 18 to 24 months,
imparting a subtle oak character.
Tasting Note
Intense aromas strawberry, fresh red fruits and delicate spice lead to a smooth, rich
palate with a fine tannic structure. The opulent texture carries flavours of kirsch, wild
strawberry, liquorice and mineral notes through to a long, elegant finish.
