Chateau Fayau Bordeaux Rouge 2018

A fresh and medium bodied style of Bordeaux showing
plenty of soft red fruit flavours.
Producer Note
Château Fayau is a beautiful chartreuse style building surrounded by vines in the heart
of the historic village of Cadillac. The 85 acre estate has been in the Medeville family
since 1826 who carry on the proud tradition of making sweet botrytised wines and a
traditional red Bordeaux blend. The vineyards are planted with Semillon, Sauvignon
Blanc, Muscadelle, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines.
Despite initially challenging weather, the 2018 Bordeaux vintage was excellent. The
winter was unusually wet and remained so throughout the spring, which brought about
threats of downy mildew. Hail also struck some vineyards during this period. However,
conditions eased, allowing for a successful flowering, followed by a particularly hot, dry
summer with surprisingly cool nights from June through to September. September
brought welcome rains, reviving the vines. Harvest took place under ideal conditions,
producing small, thick-skinned and highly concentrated berries, resulting in intensely
rich, deep wines, high in alcohol, with balancing acidity and a fresh, fruity appeal.
The south facing vineyards are situated on the slopes of Cadillac. Chateau Fayau holds
the Haute Valeur Environmentale (HVE) certification, which officially recognises the
environmental performance of winegrowers, including biodiversity conservation, plant
protection strategies, managed fertiliser use and water resource management. Trained
to the Simple Guyot method, the vines have an average age of 25 years and are
grown in clay and silica soils. The grapes are hand harvested.
The grapes were destemmed and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel
tanks and lasted between 15 and 18 days. The wine was racked, blended and
matured in underground tanks, preserving the pure fruit characters while capturing the
nuances of the terroir.
