The Crozes-Hermitage vineyard is the largest of the northern appellations, extending over 11 communes in the Drôme, located on the left bank of the Rhône. Domaine de Thalabert, property of Paul Jaboulet Aîné since 1834, is the oldest vineyard in the
appellation. Their deeply rooted, old vines were planted between 1934 and 1975, yielding 30 to 35hl/ha. Situated on the low terraces of the Rhône, the vines are planted mostly in north-south facing rows and are predominantly trained on Cordon
de Royat systems. However, some are Gobelet trained on wire or stakes. The soils are of stony and glacial origin and comprise small, rounded pebbles which store heat during the day and release it at night. The interactions of living organisms are beneficial
to the health of the vineyard. Therefore, in the heart of the Thalabert vineyard, a seven-hectare wildlife reservoir has been established. It is the first LPO biodiversity refuge in the Drôme.
