About Jim Barry Wines
Jim Barry is a household name in Australian wine. Since founding Jim Barry Wines in 1959, the family-owned winery has set the benchmark for world-class Clare Valley wines. Jim Barry, the first qualified winemaker in the region, laid the foundation for excellence, particularly in Riesling and Shiraz. Today, his legacy continues under the stewardship of Peter Barry, with the next generation—Tom, Sam, and Olivia Barry—carrying forward the family tradition. Voted ‘2020 Winery of the Year’ by Halliday Wine Companion, Jim Barry Wines produces some of Australia’s most celebrated and award-winning Shiraz and Riesling.
Vineyard
The McRae Wood vineyard, purchased in 1964, spans 28 hectares of prime Clare Valley land. Planted predominantly with Shiraz, the vineyard features grey sandy topsoil over clay subsoil. A single-cordon vine training method ensures even canopies and optimal shade. The Clare Valley’s high diurnal temperature range allows grapes to retain vibrant acidity, resulting in an elegant, complex Shiraz.
Winemaking
This 2021 Shiraz is a blend of 96% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Malbec. Grapes were destemmed, crushed, and fermented in stainless steel with gentle skin submersion to extract colour, flavour, and tannin. After malolactic conversion in the tank, the wine matured in French oak barrels for 12 months, creating a wine with depth, balance, and refined structure.

| Winery | Certain names resonate strongly within Australian wine history, and Jim Barry is one of them. It was Jim Barry’s drive that helped shape South Australia’s Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world-class Riesling and cemented it as one of Australia’s premier wine regions. Jim was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with a degree in oenology from the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Founded in 1959, Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Jim’s son Peter became managing director in 1985, and today Peter’s children Tom, Sam and Olivia are the winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Voted ‘2020 Winery of the Year' at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards, they produce highly acclaimed, award-winning wines. |
