Cantina Tramin was founded in 1898 and has 310 member winegrowers who follow
its strict directives on the cultivation of the vines. The vineyards are an integral part of
the enchanting and picturesque landscape of the Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy
and cover 260 hectares situated on the sunny slopes of the region at altitudes
ranging from 250 to 850 metres above sea level. In 2011, Cantina Tramin gained the
"Double Stella" award. This is given to a winery for achieving the prestigious "3
Bicchieri" 20 times and is awarded by the Gambero Rosso.
In spite of changeable temperatures in spring, bud break and flowering started
around the average time in 2016. Damp conditions in May and June increased the
danger of fungus infection, which demanded attention, sensitivity and hard work in
the vineyard. Thanks to intermittent sunny, dry days, this was compensated for. From
the end of August onwards, the weather was dry with warm days alternated with
periodically very cool nights, which slowed the ripening process and the harvest
started about a week later than average. The grapes were in perfect health with
optimum physiologic ripeness at harvest time. The white wines present themselves as
very balanced, powerful, juicy and fresh, with a complex structure.
The grapes are grown in 14 hectares of vineyards across three areas: near Montan,
Egna and Tramin. Alto Adige is a dynamic wine growing region in northern Italy that
combines a brisk Alpine climate, mountain viticulture and complex geology, with the
brilliance of Mediterranean sunshine. The grapes come from vineyards planted in
calcareous clay, limestone and gravel soils.
The grapes were softly pressed immediately upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation
took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tank at 19°C . No malolactic
fermentation took place. The wine was left to rest in stainless steel vats, retaining both
freshness and purity of fruit, until bottling.
Rich, full and dry with ripe melon notes and a good mineral character, layered with
a hint of almond through to a long, persistent finish.
Recommended with fish antipasti, risotto with asparagus, omelettes and pasta.
