Producer Note

In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine San Marzano'. Through the decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers. Using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques they produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques, enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the local terroir. In the Sommelier Wine Awards, San Marzano was awarded European Producer of the Year 2017.

Vintage

A mild, temperate spring was followed by a very hot and dry summer that resulted in an early harvest during the beginning of August. The total production was smaller than the previous year, however it was characterised by high quality grapes with concentrated fruit flavours.

Vineyard

he vineyard sits at approximately 100 metres above sea level and benefits from great diurnal temperature variations, which are ideal for promoting an extended ripening period for the vines and concentrating the flavours in the berries. The vines are planted at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare and are grown in soft soils, which are thin with a fine texture and good drainage. The harvest takes place during the second and third weeks of August.

Winemaking

A cryomaceration took place in the pressing machine for six to eight hours, followed by gentle pressing of the grapes. A cold static sedimentation was followed by alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperatures of approximately 12 to 14°C, which retained both the freshness and fruity aromas of the grapes. The wine was aged in stainless steel, to preserve these fruit-forward characteristics.

Tasting Note

Floral notes combine with aromas of tropical fruits and a hint citrus zest. This lively, fresh white blend is bursting with ripe flavours from the South of Italy.
