Producer Note
Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's truly great winemakers. The family owns 60
hectares of vineyard in three of the classic growing areas - Langhe, Monferrato and
Gavi and have access to a further 50 hectares through long-term relationships with
their growers. Michele has insisted on total quality since his first vintage in 1956, an
ethos which his sons Stefano and Alberto adopt today. The Chiarlo style is highly
elegant, they make complex wines that can age for decades but above all reflect
their provenance - some of the finest vineyard sites in Piedmont.
Vineyard
Produced with the grapes from the Nebbiolo hills in the Langhe area. Meticulous
cultivation in the vineyards ensures the production of high quality wines, whilst
respecting the strictest ecological critieria. The vines are subject to a balanced and
rigorous pruning policy, treatments using products with low environmental impact;
meticulous manual thinning and turfing between the rows. The grape yields are
targeted for each vineyard according to the objectives established for each
particular wine: the reduced yield per vine has ensured a higher quality final wine.
The soil in the vineyard is made up of bluish-grey, sand-rich, clayey calcareous marl;
it is a soil poor in organic substances but with a considerable percentage of
manganese and potassium.
Winemaking
The grapes were harvested at the optimum maturity levels and the wine was
produced using classical winemaking techniques. The wine was matured for one
year in large French oak barrels prior to being refined for a further six months in the
bottle.
Tasting Note
'Il Principe' is an extraordinarily classical example of a Nebbiolo, with its typically dry,
savoury flavours, a well structured palate and a firm finish.
Serving Suggestion
A wonderful match with potato gnocchi with a Castelmagno cheese sauce.
