Producer Note

Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's truly great winemakers. The family owns 60 hectares of vineyard in three of the classic growing areas - Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi and have access to a further 50 hectares through long-term relationships with their growers. Michele has insisted on total quality since his first vintage in 1956, an ethos which his sons Stefano and Alberto adopt today. The Chiarlo style is highly elegant, they make complex wines that can age for decades but above all reflect their provenance - some of the finest vineyard sites in Piedmont.

Vintage

2017 saw a mild winter with less than average rainfall, which led to limited soil water reserves. Mild spring temperatures set the growing season off early; however an extremely unusual night frost occurred during April, which led to significant frost damage in some areas. This has not occurred on this scale for 50 years. The summer was dry, temperatures stabilised and the growth cycle continued. Harvest took place earlier than usual, although the yields were down the quality of the remaining grapes was high.

Vineyard

This cuvée is produced from the vineyards in the southern part of Asti, where the soil is clayey and calcareous with a good sand content. The vineyard is planted with an easterly to south easterly exposure and the vines are Guyot trained. Harvest takes place manually, when the grapes have reached optimum maturity.

Winemaking

Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats and underwent 10 days maceration with skin contact. A gentle shower system of immersing the cap took place at temperatures of 16 to 18°C, encouraging the extraction of colour, tannins and flavour. The wine went through malolactic fermentation and remained in stainless steel tanks for at least eight months, retaining its fresh, fruity and vibrant varietal aromas.

Tasting Note

This is Michele Chiarlo's coolest Barbera. A fruity cherry scented wine with its ripe red berried fruit is a vibrant expression of the Barbera grape. Harmonious with great freshness, it has a clean and elegant finish.

Serving Suggestion

Enjoy with Piedmontese cold cuts, mushroom risotto and light pasta dishes with shaved truffles.
