The historical origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio can be traced back to the 5th
century. The present owners, the Matta family, acquired the property in 1964 and
restored it back to its former splendour. The estate, with 150 hectares, is one of the
largest in the area, and of these, 32 hectares are dedicated to the vine. Castello
Vicchiomaggio produces several styles of wine, from the traditional to the innovative.
In order to achieve this, the estate has been carefully classified according to its soil
type and exposure. All production and winemaking is supervised by John Matta. The
hallmark of John's wines is elegance, perfumed, stylish and all have beautiful
balance. These wines truly show off the Sangiovese grape at its best. Vicchiomaggio
is consistently classified amongst Italy's top estates and John Matta has been
named IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year four times in the last 14 years.
The FSM project was born in 1994 when John Matta identified the need for a totally
new wine. The estate was already producing a highly acclaimed 100% Sangiovese
(Vigna La Prima) but John Matta knew that something else was needed. Three
grape varieties were considered and studied: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and
Merlot. Much consideration was given to Castello Vicchiomaggio's microclimate, the
vineyard's location at 293 metres above sea-level on a south-facing slope and the
heavy clay soils. The decision was made to plant Merlot. The plot of four hectares
was selected and land preparations began in 1996. The care and attention given to
a vineyard during its first few years is crucial, so they planted carefully over a period
of five years, from 1999 to 2003 inclusive. Known as Frederico Secondo Matta
vineyard (FSM) after John Matta's father, the first available vintage was 2004.
Planted to a density of 5,000 vines per hectare, the now 15 year old vines are trained
in single spur pruned cordon and strict pruning restricts the yields to just 2,500 litres
per hectare, which is very low. The harvest period takes place during the first half of
The grapes were carefully sorted and destemmed. After three weeks maceration in
temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, a malolactic fermentation took place in
one year old barriques. The wine was aged in the same barriques for 29 months,
followed by 12 months in bottle prior to release. Accepted wisdom states that quality
wine comes from older vines, FSM however is produced from young vines, a fact that
John Matta likes to make known.

An exquisite red which is a treat with red meat dishes and fine cheese. FSM can be
enjoyed when released, usually when it is at least 3 years old, further cellar age
however will definitely enhance all the wine's characteristics.
