The shale is beneficial as it stores the heat of the sun and radiates it at night. The Grenache and Carignan particularly benefit from this, and reveal exceptional sugar concentration. The grapes for this wine come from old vines which are carefully selected for their low yields of 28 hectolitres per hectare. The region benefits from the warm Mediterranean climate, which is tempered by cooling sea breezes. The vines are cultivated organically and sustainably; use of sexual confusion of predators is employed as an alternative to insecticides, biodiversity is preserved and the use of cover grass is an important source of organic matter which promotes the activity and biodiversity of the soil. Part of the estate is already certified organic and the remainder is in conversion. The vines are hand-harvested at optimum maturity.
Since his early childhood, Jean Batlle spent time in the vineyards, learning his craft from his father. In 1999, he acquired the Mas de Lavail in the beautiful appellation of Maury, which is located in a valley between the Pyrenees and the Corbieres Mountains. Passionate, enthusiastic, and meticulous in his work, Jean has been unremitting in his constant quest for perfection from his 95-hectare estate. These days, Jean is joined by his son Nicolas, and together they cultivate their family domain, producing opulent, yet well-balanced wines with a rich aromatic quality.
