Vintage conditions: Good winter chilling was followed by warm conditions with low rainfall in the spring. Budburst was uniform with the promotion of even shoot growth and flowering. Fruit set was excellent in most varieties and as a result, moderate yields were expected. Fruit thinning was undertaken across the entire vineyard with added attention paid to our top end fruit. We experienced a great summer with very warm and dry conditions through to April. The exceptional weather gave us the ideal ripening conditions for all varieties and a great start to harvest. Some unsettled weather towards the end of harvest saw some challenging times for the later varieties however having an experienced team and an on-site winery enabled us to react in a timely manner. This vintage is defined by clean fruit that shows excellent varietal characteristics and balance.

Region: Hawke’s Bay (100%)

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Cabernet Franc 22%, Merlot 21%, Malbec 7%

Vineyard: All grapes used for the AD blends are grown with a specific target in mind. Vines are pruned to lower bud numbers, and no manual labour is spared in the vineyard. Shoot thinning, shoot positioning, lateral and bunch thinning are just a few of the passes we make through the vineyard. Seasonal adjustments are made in yields to guarantee excellent fruit ripeness and concentration. The grapes are hand harvested to select only the optimum quality bunches. Physiological ripeness is the main criteria determining harvest date.

Technical Winemaking Details: Grapes arrive in the winery in hand picking baskets, this ensures no damage occurs to the berries. Traditional Bordeaux winemaking practices are combined with methods that enhance the best of Hawke’s Bay terroir. Each of the six individual parcels were fermented and hand plunged in small open topped vats. After extended skin contact the wine was pressed off to complete malolactic fermentation in 225 litre barrels, 46% new, 100% French oak. Barrels were kept separate during maturation to give greatest blending possibilities, both from vineyard batches as well as oak influences. Individual barrels were tasted and selected for the blend based on quality and their contribution to the blend. Those selected give the wine depth of colour, intense fruit aroma, subtle oak and above all fine long tannins. The final maturation time in oak was 18 months. The wine was then carefully blended to tank and bottled with minimal intervention.
