cool location combined with savoury baked red fruits
and spicy black liquorice flav ours.
Producer Note
Alpha Estate is located in Amyndeon, North West Greece. It is the brainchild of two
visionaries, second generation vine grower Makis Mavridis and Bordeaux trained
wine maker Angelos Iatrides. Angelos is one of the most talented winemakers
working in Europe. This pristine estate in the cool highlands of Western Macedonia
comprises 120 hectares of privately owned single block vineyards and employs the
most up to date vineyard techniques and winemaking technology to produce world
class wines from French and indigenous Greek varietals.
Vineyard
The vineyards are located in "Petres" (rocks) and "Dromos" (roads) sub-region of the
Amyndeon plateau and comprise of 85 hectares of linear, privately owned vineyard
situated at an altitude of 620 to 710 metres above sea level. The vines are planted at
3,900 shoots per hectare and yield 60hl/ha. The soils are made up of sandy clay with
excellent drainage. Here the climate is semi-continental, often with snowfall during
the winter months and north westerly winds all year round. There is a marked
absence of spring frosts and fresh, rather than dry summers, with cool nights.
Manually harvested into small picking boxes.
Winemaking
The grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed before a cold soak with skin
contact. The alcoholic fermentation took place at gradually increasing
temperatures. The wine was aged on its lees for seven months with regular stirring,
before being matured for nine months in 100% new Allier oak casks, of medium to
light toast. The wine was then aged for a further 15 months in bottle.
Tasting Note
A complex bouquet of ripe blackberry combined with exotic spice, vanilla, clove and
cracked pepper. Full bodied on the palate, with rounded tannins and a natural
freshness from its cool location, this blend shows vanilla tones, rich, dark fruits and
intense quince flavours, through to a long persistent finish.
