One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution Gaia Estate was established in 1994 by Greek winemakers Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. Operating two different wineries they make cutting edge wines in both Nemea and Santorini. Gaia's main aim is to present the potential of the indigenous Greek grape varieties to wine enthusiasts worldwide.
2016 is considered to be one of the best four vintages in the region of Nemea of the past two decades. Exceptional conditions throughout the growing season resulted in berries in superb health at harvest time which have translated into wines with excellent fruit character and concentration.
Agiorgitiko (pronounced Ah-yor-YEE-te-ko) is a fragrant red wine grape native to Greece's Peloponnese peninsula. The grapes are cultivated in plots on the hillsides of Koutsi in Nemea, at an elevation of 550 metres above sea level. The vines are 21 years old and yield approximately 48 to 50 hectolitres per hectare. The soils here are predominantly a shallow layer of clay, on lime subsoil. This type of clay - unlike othersretains humidity and releases it to the vines when required, thus naturally helping to monitor the levels of water-stress the vine is under. The hillsides have calcareous soils and the stony soils in the foothills are considered to be the superior terroir.
The grapes were cold soaked and then slowly fermented in oak casks with selected yeasts, to ensure a good level of colour and flavour extraction. Fermentation was followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine was then matured for 14 months in second passage French oak casks. No fining or filtration was required.
