plum spice, smooth, warming and textured.
Producer Note
One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution Gaia Estate was
established in 1994 by Greek winemakers Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis
Paraskevopoulos. Operating two different wineries they make cutting edge wines in
both Nemea and Santorini. Gaia's main aim is to present the potential of the
indigenous Greek grape varieties to wine enthusiasts worldwide.
Vineyard
The grapes are cultivated in plots on the hillsides of Koutsi in Nemea, starting at an
altitude of 250 metres up to 850 metres above sea level. The soils here are
predominantly a shallow layer of clay, atop a lime subsoil. This type of clay - unlike
others- retains humidity and releases it to the vines when required, thus naturally
helping to monitor the levels of water-stress the vine is put under. The hillsides have
calcareous soils, while the stony soils in the foothills are considered the best.
Winemaking
The grapes were cold soaked and then slowly fermented in oak casks, to ensure a
good level of colour and flavour extraction. The wine was then matured for 12 to 14
months in new 225 litre French oak casks. No fining or filtration was needed. The wine
was aged in bottle for five months, prior to its release.
Tasting Note
Perfumed, with a nose of dark berry fruits and floral notes. Medium bodied on the
palate, with subtle, well integrated tannins and hints of pepper overlaid with silky
blueberry fruits, leading to a long, velvety finish. A wine not to be missed.
Serving Suggestion
Excellent with roasted red meats, particularly lamb or subtly spiced stuffed
aubergines.
