Frescobaldi Castello Nipozzano Mormoreto Toscana 2015

The top wine from the estate, Mormoreto is a rich, elegant wine with intense blueberry and Morello cherry aromas and warm balsamic and savoury notes integrated into a mouthfilling texture.

Producer Note

Tradition, innate elegance and the essence of the Renaissance: Tuscany exudes an aura of timelessness that has inspired generations of the Frescobaldi family and is now an integral part of their vineyards. The Nipozzano Estate is located in one of the traditional areas of Chianti: Chianti Rufina, which is the smallest and most elevated Chianti sub-appellation. The 11th century castle is located in the heart of the prestigious Chianti Rufina, which holds the family cellar including wines dating back to 1864. The uniqueness of the Nipozzano terroir continues to produce wines with a wide range of aromas and extraordinary longevity. Gambero Rosso awarded Frescobaldi with the prestigious ‘Tre Bicchieri Winery of the Year Award 2020’, in recognition of its uncompromising commitment to quality and innovation.

Vintage

Spring began in earnest on 21st March. The flowering phase was favoured by the alternating sunny and mild days, and lower than average rainfall when compared to the previous five years. The summer of 2015 will be remembered as one of the warmest and sunniest of the past decade; July reached temperatures above 30°C. Beneficial rains in the first week of August modified the season’s rhythm, accelerating the ripening process and bringing the harvest of excellent and healthy grapes forward to the end of August.

Vineyard

A 25 hectare vineyard planted in 1976, with more than 5,800 vines per hectare. The vineyard sits at 250 to 300 metres above sea-level. Two types of soil run through the vineyard. The first is rich in sand and well drained with a reasonable presence of calcium. The second is a limestone soil, rich in clay and calcium.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand-harvested and then softly pressed. Each variety was vinified separately. Fermentation took place over 15 days in stainless steel tanks at less than 35°C. Maceration lasted for 20 days, with malolactic fermentation taking place in barriques immediately following alcoholic fermentation. The wine was aged for 24 months in hand-split oak barrels that were new and partly once-used, before being cellared for six months in bottle.
