Wines have been made on this estate for several hundred years, dating back to
1264 when the family arrived from Italy to serve the pope in Avignon. The three hats
depicted on the label, signifies two bishops and a pope, who were among the fore
fathers of the Lançon family. Today, the Domaine with its 38 hectares in the
Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, is passing to the next generation as brothers
Jean and Michel Lançon are handing over the reins to Florent, Michel's son. Florent,
who is passionate about innovative winemaking, whilst honouring traditional values,
has recently started working with new tulip-shaped concrete vats which were initially
designed for Cheval Blanc and are at the cutting edge of winemaking technology.
Domaine de la Solitutude’s wines are renowned for their characteristic elegance
whilst expressing the true origins of their terroir.
2012 was exceptional in the sense that the Southern Rhône Valley benefited from
climatic conditions very different to those which affected the rest of France
throughout the summer of 2012. Spring was cool and dry. The rains that occurred in
mid-August and early September negated the effects of prolonged water stress in
the vines, without affecting the quality of the grapes. The whites are very well
balanced, marked by good varietal characteristics.
This Domaine has one of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its
abundance of rounded quartzite stones from the Villafranchian period. These stones
absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, promoting full grape maturity.
The grapes are manually harvested, once each variety has reached phenological
ripeness, based on grape tastings by an expert panel. The grape bunches are then
meticulously sorted to remove any unwanted fruit. The vineyard is farmed sustainably
according to the principles of la lutte raisonnée.
The grapes were gently pressed by a pneumatic press. Fermentation took place at
20°C in new barrels for the Roussanne; in neutral oak for the Grenache and in
temperature controlled vats for the Clairette. Only the Roussanne went through
malolactic fermentation. 80% of the wine was aged in barrels on its fine lees with
bâtonnage (lees stirring) for a period of 10 months. The wine was then stabilised and
bottle aged for six months prior to release.
The nose is elegant and complex showing delicate aromas of white flowers
combined with a subtle hint of wood, which has been very well integrated. The
elegant palate is rich and harmoniously balanced, with notes of dried apricots, violet
flowers and a very long, creamy, persistent finish.
The perfect match with creamy fish dishes or risotto.
