Producer Caves dEsclans is the brightest new star of the Côtes de Provence. Established in 2006 when Bordeaux-born Sacha Lichine bought the Château dEsclans, this dynamic producer harnesses both the châteaugrown grapes and fruit from local growers to create a stunning range of highly sought-after wines. Patrick Léon, the former winemaker at MoutonRothschild, oversees production.
Sacha Lichine is a man of pedigree. His father, of Russian descent, and American mother, had built their wealth and reputation with a Bordeaux business which included Chateaux Prieurie Lichine and Lascombes in Margaux. Sacha Lichine has continued with the family tradition for innovation, by drawing on his wide experience of winemaking and his keen understanding of consumer needs a range of contemporary Mediterranean wines with the ‘chicken’ labels, whose fruit forward style makes them immediately enjoyable. They are southern French with a distinct New World accent.
Vineyard The grapes come from specially selected plots at Château dEsclans, where the estates oldest vines grow on south-facing chalky-clay slopes. Harvesting only took place between sunrise and noon to avoid picking in the hottest part of the day.
Winery The grapes were sorted three times, both electronically and manually, before destemming and a light crushing at 7-8ºC. The wine was made from ninety percent free-run juice and ten percent first pressing, and vinified in new and second-fill 600-litre oak barrels for ten months, with twice weekly batonnage.

Consistently highly rated by critics and named `the best rose in the world` by Jancis Robinson MW, this wine does not fail to impress. The palate is full bodied and complex with cream, butter, cherries, ripe plums and orange zest. The structure of the palate is complemented by a fresh acidity which gives a lovely texture and a long, ripe finish.
Press Distinctive, with mango, peach and melon notes forming a weighty core, while orange zest and jicama flavors keep this defined and honest. The long finish has good drive. 91 points, Wine Spectator, September 2015
