Notes of liquorice with a hint of spicy orange and raisiny
fruit and a mouthfilling texture. Classic Gigondas.
Producer Note
St. Damien was an Early Christian saint (martyred in the year 287 A.D.), considered
the patron saint of doctors. There was a chapel to his honour in the tiny hamlet of La
Baumette, just outside the village of Gigondas, where Joel Saurel, the owner of the
domaine, lives. The name Saint Damien for the domaine was introduced in 1979.
Four generations have worked on this family estate since 1821. In 2013 Romain joined
his father on the estate. The estate has been certified organic since 2012.
Vineyard
The vineyards are situated on the terraces of Gigondas, in the 'lieu dit' of La
Lousiane. The Grenache dates from 1942, the Mourvedre from 1977 and the Cinsault
from 1951. The vines are grown in poor soils with red clay and stone fragments. The
harvest dates are determined by the maturity and flavours of the grapes, with each
variety being picked at its optimal maturity level.
Winemaking
The vinification was carried out parcel by parcel, in order to respect the specific
characteristics of each terroir. Each variety was slowly vinified separately for
approximately six weeks in concrete vats under temperature controlled conditions.
Several weeks of maceration, daily pump-overs and cap submersion every two days
took place, in order to extract the desired levels of colour, flavour and fine tannins.
Following the fermentation, the wines were then carefully blended and the resulting
wine was matured in oak barrels for a period of 12 months. This wine was bottled
without fining or filtration.
Tasting Note
A classic Gigondas with rich raisiny fruit, notes of liquorice and a hint of orange spice
leading to a beautifully textured palate. Powerful, yet retaining elegance, this is
wonderfully expressive of its terroir.
Serving Suggestion
This delicious wine accompanies both rich and savoury meat dishes as well as dark
chocolate desserts.
