An intensely flavoured and concentrated wine packed
with exotic plum fruit, dark chocolate and figs. Lovely
expression of the warm and savoury flavours of the
South of France.
Producer Note
Gérard Bertrand is one of the most outstanding winemakers in the South of France. A
biodynamic pioneer, he owns numerous estates among the most prestigious crus of
Languedoc-Roussillon. Formerly the IWC Red Winemaker of the Year and winner of
Wine Enthusiast‘s European Winery of the Year, Gérard has been cited as the “King
of the Languedoc” among critics. With vineyards situated in the inland region of the
terroir of Boutenac in Corbières, La Forge is a single parcel of a ‘gallet roulé’ soil
which was planted with Carignan vines more than a hundred years ago. It was the
favourite of Gérard Bertrand’s father and each vintage pays homage to Georges
Bertrand.
Vineyard
The remarkable quality of this wine lies in the exceptional quality of the grapes and
the age of the Carignan vines, which are 100 years old. Yields are low at 25hl/ha
and a green harvest takes place to ensure the maximum concentration of the
remaining berries. The soils in the vineyard are made up of Miocene stones.
Winemaking
The grapes were manually harvested according to tradition. Whole grapes were
then transferred to vats, without crushing and each variety was vinified separately by
carbonic maceration. The wines then went through a malolactic fermentation before
the blending of the different varieties. Ageing took place in 225 litre oak barrels for a
period of 12 months. The wine was not pressed or filtered before being bottled and
was then bottle-aged for a further 12 months, before release.
Tasting Note
Deep matured cherry colour, an explosive nose opens onto grilled toast spices and
clove. With a sugar rush, the palate reveals powerful and elegant aromas,
reminiscent of cooked red fruits. This is an exceptional wine with soft tannins and a
spicy after taste.
