Producer Note
In the middle of the 17th century, Arnaud Ducasse bought a small house, on the banks of the Gironde estuary. He could hardly have imagined that it would be the start of a superb estate which would remain in his family for almost three centuries. In 2004, CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Groupe Crédit Agricole, acquired Château Grand Puy Ducasse. An improvement plan was put together for the entire estate. It is supervised today by Anne Le Naour, Technical Director, and the consultant oenologist, Denis Dubourdieu. Dauphin de Grand Puy Ducasse is the second wine of this 5th growth Château . Vineyard
Dauphin à Grand-Puy Ducasse is the second wine of the Château Grand-Puy Ducasse and is made from the young vines on the estate. The vines have an average age of 20 years and 62% of the vines are Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% are Merlot. Three large plots in the best parts of Pauillac form the vineyard of this exceptional cru. The vineyard includes 40 hectares of vines, which border those of Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet to the North; in the centre they cover the Bourdieu of Grand Puy; and the Saint-Lambert plateau to the South. The average yield of the vines is 40 hectolitres per hectare. The Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in Garonne gravel and silica soil which is typical of Pauillac and the Merlot is grown in sandy gravel. The farming is certified sustainable. Winemaking
After hand-picking and selection of the grapes on the vine, they arrived in the winery, where they were destalked and carefully sorted once more. Fermentation was carried out in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Some of the wines underwent malolactic fermentation in new barrels. The wine was aged between 18 to 24 months, in French oak barrels, of which 10 to 15% were new. Tasting Note
