Domaine de Coyeux is a beautifully located winery comprising 130 hectares of
vineyards in a one site block, set on a hill in a prime location at Beaumes-de-Venise.
The vines are planted at an altitude of 260M, where the soil comes from one of the
very rare outcrops of the Comtadine region’s trias. The grapes grown are Syrah,
Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvedre and small white Muscat.
The Beaumes de Venise vineyard covers 17 hectares, in the heart of the appellation.
The vineyard is set on alluvial and sandy soils and is meticulously tended to with a
debudding in the spring and careful canopy management. The age of the vines
varies from 35 to 65 years. Domaine de Coyeux grows three grape varieties, each
with its own characteristics: Grenache is resistant to drought and wind and is
characterised by its richness in phenolic compounds and the potency it brings to the
blend. Syrah shows great aromatic potential and longevity. Mourvèdre requires a lot
of heat and light to ripen successfully, but imparts great colour, antioxidant
properties and aromatic characteristics to the resulting blend.
Harvesting took place by hand, based on the optimum maturity levels of the different
grape varieties. The entire crop was destemmed. Fermentation took place with
natural yeasts, in thermoregulated stainless steel vats at a temperature of 25 to 30°C.
Vatting lasted from 19 to 22 days and combined two of the grape varieties, followed
by devatting and separate racking of the free-run juice. The cuvées were blended
and matured in French Alliers oak barriques for nine months, a third of which are
new each year.
This wine has an intense colour with delicate red fruits on the nose. On the palate it is
fine with supple tannins and ripe, pure plummy fruit with chocolate and spicy notes
leading to an elegant finish.
A wonderful accompaniment to grilled and roasted meats and most grilled fish. This
is perfect with the local speciality of black truffles.
