Producer Note

Fratelli means ‘brothers’ in Italian and three sets of brothers from Italy and India have combined their passion and desire to produce wines made in India, following Italian traditions. Their passion, love and hard work have resulted in the creation of Fratelli Wines, a modern winery located in Akluj in the Solapur district. The winery holds 58 tanks of varying capacities in which they make the wines from their own estate. The estate vineyards cover 97 hectares, across three different sites at Motewadi, Garwad and Nimgaon. The vineyards have been planted with 13 different grape varieties imported from France. The viticultural and winemaking expertise has been provided by Piero Masi, a master winemaker from Tuscany and creator of the famous 'Chianti Classico Casa Sola'.

Vintage

December and January experienced mild temperatures, with maximum daytime temperatures below 30°C and 13°C at night. These constant temperatures allowed slow, consistent phenolic ripening, without any temperature spikes shocking the grapes. It also encouraged the preservation of primary aromas and enabled the tannins to mature slowly. The Sangiovese grapes were harvested on 10th February and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked at the end of February. Both varieties were healthy and reached perfect phenolic ripeness, with smooth tannins.

Vineyard

Sette is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon from the rocky soils of Fratelli estate owned vineyards located on the right bank of the Nira River, Akluj, in Maharashtra. The Cabernet Sauvignon was grown in Plot B of Motewadi, Akluj, where the rocky soil is derived of mother rock, with no organic soil and excellent drainage. The Sangiovese is from the central lines of Plot C of Garwar, Akluj, where the soil is of an average depth and 15% clay with no presence of sand. These organically poor soils reduce vigour, an important factor in managing disease in this warm, humid climate.

Winemaking

Each variety was vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at 28 to 30°C, lasting five to six days. The wine was matured in new French oak (80%) and new American (20%) oak barrels for 14 months.
