Lime, apples and nettles on the nose. The palate is alive
with lemon/lime acidity and an attractive, flinty
minerality.
Producer Note
Piers Greenwood is a bit of a visionary, he planted his vineyard in Purleigh, Essex in
1969, which makes it one of the oldest in the UK. The vineyard benefits from a very
special microclimate and Purleigh is one of the warmest and sunniest spots in the
country. Today New Hall Vineyard has 40 hectares under vine and one of the largest
plantings of Bacchus in the UK. Winemaker Piers has won the prestigious UK
Winemaker of the Year Award in 2013, 2015 and 2016 and his highly acclaimed and
award-winning wines showcase English Wine at its best.
Vintage
2016 was a challenging year for UK winegrowers, with lower yields than in previous
years. However, the high ripeness levels, dry harvest and clean grapes should
produce some excellent wines.
Vineyard
Bacchus is a grape that needs to be picked before becoming over-ripe to retain its
intense and distinctive grapey flavours. The vineyards comprise of London clay soils,
from the Tertiary age, with chalk concealed below the clay deposits.
Winemaking
The fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats at
controlled temperatures of between 12 to 18°C, in order to retain the primary, fruit
aromas. The wine was left on its lees for three months, adding texture, body and
complexity to the final wine.
Tasting Note
Pale lemon in colour with lime, apples and gentle floral notes with just a dash of
cinnamon. Off dry, with a slight 'spritz' and a fresh acidity, the palate is perfectly
balanced with a layered depth of rounded fruit and an attractive minerality.
Serving Suggestion
Perfect served chilled as a refreshing apéritif, or with white meat and fresh fish dishes.
