Producer Note

Cantina Tramin was founded in 1898 and has 310 member winegrowers who follow its strict directives on the cultivation of the vines. The vineyards are an integral part of the enchanting and picturesque landscape of the Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy and cover 260 hectares situated on the sunny slopes of the region at altitudes ranging from 250 to 850 metres above sea level. In 2011, Cantina Tramin gained the "Double Stella" award. This is given to a winery for achieving the prestigious "3 Bicchieri" 20 times and is awarded by the Gambero Rosso.

Vintage

Despite changeable temperatures in spring, flowering and budbreak took place at average times. Damp conditions in May and June required vigilance in the vineyard, intermittent dry, sunny days throughout the summer compensated for the damp start to the summer. Towards the end of August warm daytime temperatures and very cool night temperatures extended the ripening period, resulting in the harvest starting one week later than average. The grapes were in perfect health with optimum physiologic ripeness at harvest time.

Vineyard

The Gewürztraminer vines are planted between 400 and 500 metres above sea level in the small hamlet of Söll, above the village of Tramin. The vines are between15 to 25 years old and yield 19 hectolitres per hectare. The soil is made up of clay and gravel, with a limestone layer from 20 to 100cm and porphyry bedrock. The vineyard site does not endure the winds from Lake Garda because it is planted in a small bowl formed by the surrounding hills – this shelter helps with the development of Botrytis Cinerea, which is essential to the production of high quality late-harvest wine.

Winemaking

The grapes were late harvested during the month of December. The hand-picked berries were delivered in small containers. The grapes were macerated for approximately 12 hours and then gently pressed under a pressure of 1.8 bar. The wine was fermented with selected yeasts at 19°C in barriques followed by six to nine months' ageing in the same barriques.
