Producer One of Bordeauxs pre-eminent winemakers, Denis Dubourdieu is Professor of Oenology at Bordeaux University, a highly sought-after consultant both locally and abroad, and the owner of the renowned Château Doisy-Daëne in Sauternes.

Vineyard Largely replanted during the 1950s and 1960s, the Doisy-Daëne vineyard is now well over forty years old. The soil composition on the Barsac plateau is unusual for the Bordeaux region. A thin layer of clayey sands, known as Barsac red sands, tops the chalky subsoil. Traditional ploughing was performed, and no weedkiller is used in the vineyard. Organic manure is made with vegetal-based composts. Bud removal, trellising and leaf removal was all carefully done by hand.

Winery After a slow pressing, the juice fermented and aged ten months in French oak barrels, with one third new wood. The wine then spent nine months in tank before bottling.

Taste Expertly made Sauternes that combines crystalline purity with decadent ripe apricot fruit. Marmaladey botrytis notes and subtle spicy wood add complexity.

Press The flagship sweet wine of Professor Denis Dubourdieu, this is a beautifully made wine and one of the best I have tasted from the chateau. The wine exhibits a bold, opulent style with gobs of fruit, some honeyed peach, apricot, and pineapple notes, an elegant yet substantial mouthfeel, and superb purity backed up the zesty acidity, giving the wine a laser-like focus. It is moderately sweet and by no means cloying at all. This is a gorgeous wine, probably not among the longest-lived of the vintage, but it has at least 20 years left in it. 93 points, The Wine Advocate , February 2009
