Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's truly great winemakers. The family owns 60
hectares of vineyard in three of the classic growing areas - Langhe, Monferrato and
Gavi and have access to a further 50 hectares through long-term relationships with
their growers. Michele has insisted on total quality since his first vintage in 1956, an
ethos which his sons Stefano and Alberto adopt today. The Chiarlo style is highly
elegant, they make complex wines that can age for decades but above all reflect
their provenance - some of the finest vineyard sites in Piedmont.
2017 saw a mild winter with less than average rainfall, which led to limited soil water
reserves. Mild spring temperatures set the growing season off early, however an
extremely unusual night frost occured during April, which led to significant frost
damage especially in Monferrato. This has not occurred on this scale for 50 years.
The summer was dry, temperatures stabilised and the growth cycle continued.
Harvest took place earlier than usual, although the yields were down the quality of
the remaining grapes was high.
The grapes come from the vineyards in the heart of this historic area, which have
been carefully selected and are the most suited to this grape variety. The vines are
planted in a South East and South West orientation to maximise the sun's exposure
and are cultivated according to the Guyot method. The vineyard soils are of
sedimentary and marine origin which consist of mostly chalk with traces of lime. The
manual harvest takes place when the grapes have reached optimum maturity.
The grapes were gently pressed. A slow fermentation took place in temperature
controlled stainless steel autoclaves until the alcohol level reached 5%. During this
process, part of the carbon dioxide developed during fermentation remained
“entrapped”, imparting the wine with its mild, natural effervescence. The
temperature was then lowered to 0°C to arrest the fermentation and also to retain
the natural sweetness and freshness of the Moscato grape. The wine was micro
filtered to give the wine its clarity, purity and prevent any further fermentation of the
Floral aromas are seamlessly complemented by peach and apricot notes on the
fragrant bouquet. The gently sparkling palate is delicate, light and creamy; with a

An iconic dessert wine, try with soft chestnut cream in crispy waffles.
