nuances of strawberries and baked plums.
Ventolera is an exciting new venture between founder Vicente Izquierdo and one of
Chile's top winemakers Stefano Gandolini. The vineyard, which was planted in 1999,
is located in the region of the Leyda Valley, just six kilometres from the Pacific Ocean.
The area is being singled out as being Chile's newest and most radical cool-climate
wine region, which is strongly influenced by the cooling effects of the Humboldt
Current that flows up from the Antarctic. ‘Ventolera’ is a Spanish word which refers to
this strong sea wind; its cooling influence is instrumental in producing wonderfully
The fruit for this Pinot Noir comes from the most granitic soils in the property. Picked
from two blocks that were planted in 1999 and 2002, the vine rows with a South
Easterly orientation are known as "Block 1" and come from clone 242, whereas the
rows with a North Easterly orientation are "Block 20" and come from the same clone,
242. The vines are trained according to the Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) method.
Careful canopy management takes place with 18 shoots per metre to protect the
fruit exposure (less than 15%) and enhance the freshness in the final wine. The vines
have two bunches per shoot.
The grapes were all hand picked into 12kg bins, during the first week of April. The
grapes in each sector of the vineyard were analysed according to their taste profile
and physiological ripeness and then picked accordingly. Once the grapes arrived at
the winery they were then cooled down for 12 hours before being carefully selected.
After two selection tables, the grapes were destemmed and then transferred
immediately to the fermenting tanks. All the fruit was fermented whole. After this, a
cold maceration process took place for eight days, in a very reductive environment.
Fermentation lasted for six days at controlled temperatures of 28 to 29°C. Finally, the
wine was racked in new French oak barrels for a period of seven to eight months.

The berry fruit in this wine accompanies dishes with a touch of spice well, such as
crispy duck pancakes or pulled pork.
