Producer Note
Via's definition of Black Sheep is someone special and out of the ordinary who attracts attention and stands out from the crowd. Winemaker Carlos Gatica seeks to combine sustainable viticultural practices with innovative winemaking, to produce fruit-driven wines of real character. "Sustainability, expression of terroir, and quality are key. The aim is to deliver wines with superior quality, at fair prices, made in harmony with nature". These are individual wines for individual people. Vineyard
The grapes used to make this wine are sourced from the El Condor and La Esperenza blocks planted in 1998 and located in the San Rafael Estate in Maule. No foliage management is required here because rainfall is low during the ripening months and soil fertility is moderate, resulting in vines with a balanced vigour. The total yield is approximately nine tonnes per hectare. Winemaking
The grapes were destemmed but not crushed in order to minimise berry breakage before entering the stainless steel tanks, where they were cold macerated for four days at 10°C. The alcoholic fermentation lasted approximately 22 to 24 days at temperatures of between 27° and 29°C. The must saw three pumpovers per day. Following the alcoholic fermentation, 50% of the blend was aged in oak barrels (60% French and 40% American) for eight to 10 months. The wine was cold stabilised and earth filtered before bottling. Tasting Note
The palate is juicy and well-balanced with medium to high intensity. The fruit stands out on the palate and leads to spicy notes and a soft touch of oak, tobacco, and coffee. This wine shows soft, friendly tannins and a pleasingly persistent finish. Serving Suggestion
Serve with beef casserole, game or lightly spiced lamb curries.
