- A powerful and generous wine expressing itself with delicacy thanks to a very delicate tannic structure. Intense flavors of ripe fruits and spices combined to a fine acidity – between richness and strength reflecting perfectly the terroir of Heathcote.
With his pioneering spirit, Michel Chapoutier set off to discover the terroirs of the oldest continent, with an idea: growing Rhone grapes in Australia. This was the beginnings of a tremendous voyage of discovery, observation and eventually, affection for that land. On what he found to be very special terroir, he planted non-grafted vines from 19th century clonal selections, imported from Europe before phylloxera took its toll. The non-negligible advantage was that in Australia, the harvest coincides with the French spring: ideal timing.
The Chapoutier family have long been known as a leading light of the Rhône Valley, but in 1997 Michel Chapoutier expanded their horizons into the New World, specifically the Australian region of Victoria. Initially making wines in conjunction with renowned local wineries such Jasper Hill and Giaconda, in 2009 Chapoutier purchased the Shays Flat and Landsborough Valley estates in the Australian Pyrenees, giving birth to the wholly owned Domaine Tournon. Unsurprisingly the focus is on Shiraz, which under Chapoutier’s skilled hand manages to evoke the minerality and elegance of the Northern Rhône, whilst still expressing the soil and climate of Victoria.
