The Sangiovese grapes come from the single vineyard Il Roccafiore in the Todi subregion of Umbria. The micro climate experiences cold and rainy winters and cool ventilated summers, which help to produce a refreshing vibrancy to the grapes. The vineyard is positioned at 300 to 380 metres above sea level, where considerable thermal excursions between day and night, allowing a slow, gradual ripening of the fruit which encourages rich fruit flavours balanced by natural acidity. The soils comprise white clay, calcareous marl, chalk and sand, offering the vines great nutrients and balance. The Guyot-trained vines are carefully cultivated following sustainable and organic principles. Weeding takes place in alternate rows, care is taken to prevent soil erosion and compaction; green manure is used for fertilisation and grasses and cruciferae plants improve the soil structure and fertility.

Founded during the late 1990s by Leonardo Baccarelli, the Roccafiore project was started with a vision to produce wines only from native grapes with an organic and sustainable approach. Located in Todi, Umbria, the valley extends from Perugia to Terni
in an area known as the green heart of Italy. The estate has been landscaped to enhance the estate’s diverse biodiversity, with a reforestation project, which aims to help combat climate change. Sustainability is at the heart of the Roccafiore project, with lightweight bottles, biofuels being used for agricultural equipment and a reduction of water consumption. Leonardo’s son Luca has joined the family business, and together with winemaker Cristian Giorgioni and oenologist Alessandro Biancolin, they focus on producing terroir-driven, mineral wines from their estate vines. The vineyard covers 15 hectares of undulating hills surrounded by olive groves, and it is certified by the Green Heart Quality for sustainable agriculture.
